Bald Eagles Facts - Behavior

Bald eagles are partially migratory. Their migration depends upon the quality of their environment. For example, if they have access to open water, they are likely to remain at the same nesting place year round. Those populations that do not have access to water tend to leave their nesting sight in the winter and migrate to south.

During migration, Bald eagles are known to use three methods of flight. They can ascend in a thermal and then glide down. The second method is circling down a stream of thermals. Or, they can use rising air, which is generated by the wind as it sweeps down some raised feature of the terrain.

Wild Bald eagles tend to live for 16 to 20 years. These birds possess powerful feet and talons for grasping their prey and a large hooked bill for eating it. One of the amazing facts about Bald eagles is their huge wingspan, which is about 6 to 7 feet. The wingspan enables these birds to soar on warm mountain air thermals.

Bald Eagles Facts - Subspecies

Scientists generally recognize two subspecies of bald eagle: the northern race and the southern race, the size being the only major difference between the two. The northern birds are considerably larger. The southern subspecies is found in the Gulf States from Texas and Baja California across to South Carolina and Florida. Northern Bald eagles are found in the Northwest, especially in Alaska.
